Hi all, I was wondering if anyone had a link to adjusting the clutch on an xj 650. I took the cover of to polish it and then put it back on. It was working fine. I can see the clutch moving (through the oil filler) when you pull the lever but the clutch won't engage. O'h stupid question. Does the engine have to be going for the clutch to operate??? It wasn't.
    Thanks
    Peter

I'd be interested in a similar answer for a xj900f. If there's a download available could someone point me in the right direction please.

Incidentally Cjhols the clutch should operate whether the engine is running or not.

    Regards,

    Triker

The CLUTCH should operate, yes. You will not be able to shift through the entire pattern without turning the rear wheel however, it's a sequential gearbox.

Thirty year old clutches often don't operate properly even if correctly adjusted.

Adjustment is simply a matter of getting the throwout lever on top of the housing positioned in the right "starting position" to get a full pull on the throwout mechanism.

Turn the throwout shaft fully in the clockwise direction (viewed from above) until it STOPS. The pullrod is now against the back of the pressure plate. Install the lever so the pip on the "heel" aligns with the pip on the case. Install return tension spring, install and adjust cable to 1mm ~3mm free play at the bar. Done.

If the clutch still won't fully release, back the little lever up "one spline" from where it is and re-adjust.

(Assuming the cable is properly lubed and not worn out/fraying inside requiring replacement.)
