Well, I thought I was going for the 1st road test of my 85 maxim resto-mod yesterday, it finally seen the light of day , that felt at least nice. However, during the rebuild ,i removed the clutch cover only to paint and reinstalled with new gasket. I removed and painted over a year ago and just recently placed back on bike. Poor memory !
So yesterday, when ready to road test , it was obvious that the clutch cable was not able to pull the clutch rod
that goes thru the cover up far enough to dis-engage the clutch. It is not a cable adjustment problem, with cable off i can only pull the cable connector on the gear that runs thru cover about 1 inch. If it were a clock (looking straight at it) the gear starts at 9:00 and stops at 10:00. It seems that it should have more travel than that or i did something wrong on the cover re-install. I did not do any thing with clutch plates or pressure plate.
I drained all oil last night, cause I'm sure the cover needs to come off today and maybe it will be obvious of what i did or didn't do. But if any body can link me a diagram of the clutch rod assembly and cover i would appreciate it. That way when it's off, it can go right back on and maybe be riding by tomorrow. LOL maybe ?

Did you take the slack out of the clutch rod arm before adjusting the cable?

if you're moving it with your fingers, that don't count ! that arm is way too hard to move with your fingers. when you turn it to 10:00 that will be where the arm is when your moving and the clutch is engaged. there should be spring tension at the end of the arm for another 1/2 to 3/4 inch, that's the working range of the clutch. get something on it and try to move it to 10:30
