I am hearing and feeling noise and vibration in the clutch area and after removing the side cover and clutch plates have noticed that the gear in back of the clutch has some side to side play. Is this normal and if so, what would be the likely cause? How much play is normal?

    NOT ENOUGH INFO.

    Bike?
    Year?
    Mileage?
Why did you take the clutch apart to begin with?

Clutch guts vary between different models, you haven't given us enough to go on.

Sorry for the lack of info. I'm new at this.
It is a 85 xj750 Maxim x that I perchased from someone that had it sitting in an unheated garage for 6 or 7 years. It shows 24000km on the odometer but I was told that the clutch and second gear had been worked on when the previous owner was driving it.
I was hearing a noise that sounded like a rattley gear. It is loudest in second and quieter as you go up the gears. First gear was the quietest though.
    Any thoughts?
