I have a 86 Yamaha Venture Royale and I have an odd electrical problem. I get a STRONG BLUE spark from the engine to the front right exhaust pipe when I revve up the engine and let go of the throttle. It has to be due to a bad coil leaking power when the engine is revved. If it increase the power in a normal fashion no spark. But when done fast you get a loud snapping and sparking as you decelerate.
I've replaced the plug wires, cleaned up and tightened the screws in the caps. Resistance is good just off 10K either way. 10K is normal on the Venture. Can't see any sparking anywhere except from the engine to the collar on the front right exhaust pipe. Number three cylinder I believe. I'm thinking maybe a problem with the number 3 coil? Any ideas?

Due to the recent spike in Ignition Coil related problems; I think the Factory Installed Coils, approaching 30-years old, have had all the fun used-up in them.

    Now they are problematic.

Ya I'm thinking the same thing. I was just outside started the bike in the dark but can't see any other spark. A thought just crossed my mind is it possible that it could be an exhaust leak at the manifold that's causing this? I know that it's highly unlike but just thinking!

the engine is grounded, the pipe is held on with a collar bolted to the engine, the pipe is grounded through the mufflers or something, os they are all at the same electrical potential.
i don't think your seeing a spark, how about a blue jet of flame from a leaky exhaust gasket?
take a meter and check continuity from the engine to that pipe, if you have a connection you can't have a spark

Polock it is/was an exhaust leak!!! 8O I loosened the exhaust nuts and reseated the exhaust pipe into the head. I had to push down on the pipe then tighten the nuts back up to get it the seat properly. Glade that's all it was! Did not want to have to pull the coils that's a real PTA!!! :? Thanks for confirming my suspicions. :D
