Coils bad? or just bad testing method

    I have been getting back into testing and upgrading everything after a year or two of sitting. I took care of the fuse block when I got the bike two years ago. I have a pair of alternator brushes ordered, have not yet checked the pair on the bike, but expect to have to replace them. Fuel filter is going in next. Now on to the issue: I tested the coils and the primary leads are 2.7 ohms on each coil, within spec. The secondary leads (spark plug boots) tested out at 22k ohms for both coils. Per the Haynes manual these are way out of spec. However, book says that if the coil is damaged it will have an open circuit. How should I proceed? Can I use the coils in the interim while I replace the fork seals, springs and oil so that I can test the new handling characteristics, or is there a potential for damage to other parts of the electrical system?

    By the way, the bike has about 16,000 miles, sat for about a year before I got it and aside from air cleaners, a jet kit and a 4 into 1 exhaust, is stock.

    They are probably good. The sparkplug caps are 5kohm resistor caps. The Haynes specs are taken with the caps off. Try this way and see if they fall back to about 11kohms. To remove the caps pull and turn countercockwise. They unscrew off a threaded stud in the cap.

    I'll give that a try. I think I need to replace the spark plug caps, two of the four have cracks at the ends. Until I get them I'll try to glue the cracks to prevent further damage, as a temporary fix. Thanks for the info.
