a fellow area rider is putting miles on an old 750 maxim and was in need of some coils...

he had some on order but they hadnt come in in time for a big multi chapter club ride so i lent him mine from my 750R...

he said he tested them out before hand and while they both fired, one was pretty weak...

are dyna coils my best best for replacing them or is there something a bit cheaper that will be suitable?

im not worried about the needed adapters for mounting the dynas, ive got the methods and materials to create my own hangers as needed but id like a nice set to put back on...

Cheapest option is a used coil from here or maybe craigs list or ebay.
Accell makes a kit that includes coils, mounting hardware and wires with boots for around 150$.I put a set on my XS11 and it was a big improvement in starting and power.
Dyna coils are cheaper but don't come with wires(depends where you buy them)

I agree with mlew, Accel coils are amazing. Have heard good things about Dyna coils also, but adding either of these will make your bike come to life a lot quicker and with greater enthusiasm. Good luck.

BTW, can you show us your coil mounting ideas? This comes up frequently. Thanks

I mounted my Dyna's by using the original foward mounting holes and beding threaded rod into an S shape for the rear mounts. put a nut on both side of the coil mounting tabs (on the threaded rod) and against the frame tube mount and locktite. workds perfect. if you look through my old posts you'll find pics

which Accel coils do i need?

i see on their website there are inductive and cdi coil sets...

there was a brand new set on ebay that were cdi i ended up passing on because i wasnt sure it that was what i needed. would be a bummer to have passed and they were the right ones. they sold for just about $100 i think...

I used Accels. The performance increase was great. After 2 years, one coil went bad. Not real happy with my $150 investment. Just a thought.

here's a pic of threaded rod as I mentioned earlier. use the front holes and then do this. you'll see a nylon nut I put on the top there, it was close to the screw for the low tension wire so I just put it there for insurance. Oh, I threaded this peice of rod so that's why you don't see it, but same thing. just bend it where you need and put a nut as a stop and tighten another nut on the other side of the coil mount.
