This is a question for you guys in the colder climes. As long as the bike is in the garage on these cold days we are now having here in the Carolina's the front brake works just fine. I've just taken up riding the XJ to work on a daily basis and have noticed that when the bike gets cold it drags after I use it. Any thoughts on what to look for? I've lubed the pad to pin interface but its still hanging up when it gets cold.

Did you rebuild the caliper yet?

I'll second that- caliper needs to be rebuilt.
Have you painted the XS yet? Last I saw it , black tank and red side covers.

Have to think that the piston in the caliper is at fault...maybe the pad on the slider shims......when was the last rebuild?

I had the caliper apart when I first got the bike a few years ago. I cleaned out the gunk from behind the piston seal and flushed the system. I remember it was a PITA to bleed but has been working well except for when it gets very cold. I agree its got to be in the caliper. I'll pull it apart and go thru it.

MLEW, took me some time to find decent XS1100 side covers for a decent price but I did. I slicked them and they just got shot with primer/sealer last weekend. Next time you see it it will be all one color.

Yeah, I think if you're gonna pull it apart again, replace the rubber seals and the "O" ring in the chamber + fine grit on the cylinder and bore [up and down in the line of travel]

    Here's one seal:

Outer seals are in good condition. The gunk that builds up behind the piston seal is most likely my problem. I"ll replace the piston seal while I'm in there as I have one in the parts box. The 1100 is doing the same thing so it is going to be a brake fest. Yammadof thanks for the pictures

The Gunk that forms in the Main Seal Channel IS what causes most problems.
As it forms; the Main Seal is forced "Out-of-round".
The close tolerances allowing Piston's Travel are reduced by the sludge causing the Piston to Bind.
