If I forget to open the choke when I start my bike cold, it won't start (or it will immediately die) and then it refuses to start until it has sat for at least several hours. It will crank, but never turn over.

Can anyone explain why this is so? Any way to get it started if I make this mistake?

    Thanks!

You mean crank, but not FIRE?

A weak battery will cause this exact symptom. I would recommend you fully charge your battery, and take it to an auto parts store and have it load tested.

A weak battery will often spin the starter quite vigorously, but not have enough "juice" left to actually fire the ignition. Since a battery will "come back up" a little bit on it's own, it would explain why it works ok after a while.
