When I first start up my 83 XJ650, I need to run it with the choke for quite some time before I can rev it past 1,000 rpm. If I don't wait and try to rev it, it dies around that 1,000 range. I've had it for a month and twice I wasn't able to keep it running when started and had to park it for a bit. Once I'm able to rev it, I can take off the choke and drive it. Once it's started in the morning, it's fine for the rest of the day.

Any ideas on where I should start to look? I've done some basic work on engines in the past but this is my first bike and I don't want to start twisting and turning things without a plan.

    Thanks
