Look what I found on Craigslist! I was looking for a project bike, something a little bigger than my 650 Maxim. I'm ready to hand the 650 over to the wife and get something I can customize a bit, make it my own. The 650 Maxim is registered in her name, and she wants to keep it as stock as possible. I've really come to love riding and wrenching on it and I was convinced that what I wanted was another XJ.

This is what I found: '82 XJ750 Maxim

It was listed as a "parts or project" bike for $300. There were no photo's in the post, but it claimed to be mostly complete. Boy was it! 8O It's missing the battery and the battery side cover (go figure). Both front turn signals mounts are cracked and broken. There's a huge dent (that you can just barely see in the photo) in the front right of the fuel tank, with a little rust on the inside. Also, whatever fell on the tank must have bounced off the engine, too, because a couple of fins on the head are bent and cracked.

The PO bought it as a parts bike a few years back. He already had a daily runner and a basket case to back it up at the time, so he never really did anything to this one. It was running when he got it, but he said the idle was "never quite right" and thought it was due to bad wiring. He threw in a extra complete wiring harness just to be sure I could get it going.

I offered him $250. He gladly took it and a couple days later he helped load it into my buddy's truck. I'm completely stoked. :D The plan is to get it running, perform all the maintenance, then start modifying it little by little. But that has to wait until I finish the valve job/carb cleaning/synching spring tune up project I got going on with the 650. No rest for the wicked... and this thing will be wicked.
