    Hello all!

I think I'd like a set of crash bars for my 550 maxim.
Would any of you folks know which models/years will fit?

    Thanks!

    Will a set from a 650 fit a 550?

Well, actually..... Some DO fit. I know that for a fact since I have several different sets of crash bars and have swapped them around between 550, 650, and 750's.

The issue that does come up is that for some of them-- if the clutch cable is routed correctly, it's a tight tight squeeze and may even be pinched between the top of the crash bar and the frame near the mounting bolt. But if the cable is relocated or replaced with a longer cable then the issue can disappear, too....

    Thanks.
I don't mind a few modifications to make a set work. I'd just like to keep the cutting, welding, drilling and whatever to a minimum.

SOME of the 650-900 crash bars (not counting the XJ700 versions, which are unique to those bikes only) will fit the 550's.......it depends who the crash bar manufacturer is. Some of them have enough "slop" in their mounting points to allow fitment on the 550 models, which do have slightly different mounting point positions (the difference is about 1/2" in 3-dimensional space).

SOME of the 650-900 crash bars will NOT fit the 550 models, because the tolerance to which their mounting ear orientations and mounting hole size/shape do not allow them to fit on the 550 mounting points...........

It's next to impossible to tell which of the 650-900 bars will fit the 550's just by visual inspection. WEMOTO (euroland) makes an "adjustable arm" version of crash bars that will fit all 550-900 models, simply becase one of the mounting points is adjustable. Of course, the "adjustable" factor means that the mounting arm on these bars is bolted to the main crash bar structure (rather than welded), so the entire structure may not be as strong as a fully-welded structure, but they're probably strong enough for at least a one-time crash event.....

    ...and since I have a 550, and a 650, and a 750...........AND a 900, I can swap parts at will to verify fitment :)

Well, thanks for all the help guys, I know what I have to do now.

I'm always looking for other XJ bikes in my area. I bought this one from Craigslist and it was mostly intact, save for #3 carb body that was destroyed. Pilot jet well broken, I'm not sure how someone would do that, but I digress.

If I happen across another one, and if the price is right (as this one was), I'll surely add it to my collection.
