I recently purchased a 750 parts bike and it's mostly complete - aside from the frozen twist throttle cable (carb throttle control moves freely), cracked rear sissybar/shock mount trim and missing battery - I think I have a diamond in the rough runner for $135

The only actual problem I have with it is I don't have a working key. The PO twisted the key into the ignition so amazingly well it's locked in place.

I'm having it soak in PB Blaster, with little success.

My question is: on the key, at the bottom of the neck I can make out a letter "E" followed by 5 numbers. E.g. "E-12345"

Would this be considered the key cuttings I'd need to provide to a locksmith to make a duplicate to open the tank/helmet lock?

From what I have read, that code should be all any competant locksmith or dealer would need to cut you a new key.

The E means you have an E key way lockstep on your bike so you will need to find "E" key blanks.
If your lock smith does not have the proper blanks you can get them from xj4ever. Len will have them for sure.
The series of numbers are just the tumbler numbers for the various positions on the key.
If you have a Yamaha dealer near by they might be able to cut the keys from the numbers but you will pay more there than a good lock shop.

    BigT, MN-Maxims that's the info I needed.

I've used Minneapolis Lock & Key before to make a spare for my first 750 Maxim -- hopefully now I can get at the tank and check how it looks inside with a copy.

Then it's off to ebay to get a matching lock set for seat, tank, and ignition :)
