None of us plan on being down on the black hard stuff sliding at speed yet a set of these specialty pants may save one from 'road rash'. Kevlar, the same material used for bulletproof vests, is used although I'm uncertain of where its heaviest in the construction.

Anyone using these jeans or had a "road encounter" while wearing them?

I looked at these but as a commuter I don't want to carry a change of clothes or have multiple pairs of these to wear everyday. They look great for a trip but I would rather have armor I can wear over my clothes. A guy here at work has a great pair I need to look closer at - I think they are first gear. Have removable panels so they work in all seasons.

    Anyway just my 2 cents...

I have a couple of pairs of Draggin Jeans and love them. Apart from skin protection, they keep your knees warm(er) in winter and you dont get sweaty in the summer as they are breathable. Very comfortable to wear and are almost indistinguishable from ordinary jeans. Have worn them over many hours and many, many days on European trips.

Recently I bought a pair of concept6 from hoodjeans.co.uk - a better design imo, where the knee armour fits into upside down pockets so that it does not catch/get in the way when taking the jeans on and off. Hip armour stays put too.

This is a pita in the Draggin Jeans where the velcro knee pad simply sticks to the kevlar. I think the hood are a superior product.

Recommended - although I haven't had to test out their skid resistance yet, thankfully.

In both "road encounters" I've had in my 44 years of riding I was wearing good ol' Levis and they held up well enough (not really wearable any more in both cases) to save my skin. I did learn not to keep my wallet in my back pocket though.

Ground clean away, along with some of the seams on the Levis. I did recover my social security card and a couple of shredded dollar bills tho...
