    Hey guys,

Was riding the other day when I lost power. Barely made it home. Pulled my plugs. 1 & 4 looked good, 2 & 3 black and wet. Changed plugs, bike still didn't run right. Tested each plug wire by inserting old spark plug and grounding end to bike. Cranked and looked for spark. No spark on 2 & 3, which share an ignition coil.

Is the ignition coil the problem? Haven't switched the two around yet... is that the next step (run 2&3 on ignition coil for 1&4 and see if they spark)? All connections appear to be tight. Thanks.

Switching the electrical connectors on the coils and looking for spark is a quick way to ensure that the coil/wires/caps are in working order.

Also, make sure you have plenty of battery voltage. The XJ ignition system gets flaky on low voltage.

If it's not the coil then you need to check the pick up coils with an ohm meter.

If everything else checks good (including connections) then it'll be the TCI.

It was a faulty coil. New one coming form the UK for 25 bucks...

    Thanks for the response.
