:( My daily rider (82 xj750) that me and my family depend on for me to get to work, broke a starter chain guide. Right now things are tight, so if any one has a spare, I am willing to give you fare price plus shipping. I want to thank every one in advance for your help. Ralph Morgan

Sorry but I have no parts for your bike but I'd suggest checking fleabay, finding either the part or a seller with your bike who has listed a bunch of parts.....even if they haven't listed the part that you need. Often, you can write to them, tell them what you need and they'll give you a break on the price if you tell them that you know its worth more, but that you don't have the money.....

just trying to help you out....

A starter chain guide is not going to be cheap, or easy. It will require open case surgery. You will risk more harm than good trying to cheap out on the repair with used parts.

It is also highly probable that the chain itself has stretched. Which in turn damages the oil nozzle, and would also require replacement. While you are inside the case it would be advisable to replace the starter clutch springs, and rollers.

As the bike is your primary means of transportation for work. I would consider all the above as the minimal amount to be done. A rough parts guesstimate would be approx $150 - $200.

It might almost be better to try to locate a good used engine to swap into the bike. Then repair the engine as time, and money permit.

Sorry about the bad news. Just trying to give you a heads up on what you are looking at.

MiGhost is right; that repair requires splitting the cases.

The quickest and easiest (and probably cheapest) fix would be an engine swap; then repair yours correctly and swap back before the guide in the replacement lets go.

Thanks guys, already split the case. I finally raised the money to buy a new from one Len. As far as chain stretch I don't think that will be an issue because the guide just recently gave way. And as for the oil nozzle goes, not a scratch. What gaskets I need I will make myself. I didn't take the jugs off so that will save me some cash. While I have the mill out its going to get a fresh coat of paint. The main and rod bearings still look pretty good. I have my reasembly space looking like a clean room now. Any pointers on reassembly for this particular mill? There's nothing out of my mechanical capabilitys. Thanks, Ralph

As you already have it open. Deffinately take the time to look at that starter clutch. $20 for springs, and rollers now will save you the hassle of splitting the cases again in the future. An upgrade would be to use the springs, and rollers for the 900 engine (Higher spring rate).

Nearly all the gaskets that you need will be paper/fiber gaskets, No problems with making those. But think about replacing the shift shaft seal, and be careful with the crankshaft end seals when reassembling.

Use anti-sieze on the case bolts, and follow the torque specs very carefully. The soft aluminum of the cases will strip out easily. As long as you did not disturb to much stuff on the inside. It should go back together easily.
