Is anyone riding on 80 series tires?
I have an XJ900 and am now in need of tires. The bike specs say the bike came with 100/90-18 front, and 120/90-18 rear. A PO installed 110/90-18 front and 130/90-18 rear. In checking tire diameters a 110/80-18 front would be closer to factory thus making my speedo more accurate. By going to a 130/80-18 rear it would give my front to rear stance the same angle making the suspension act as it was made to. I already know the 110 and 130 sizes will fit but with the lower profile tires should feel more responsive...right? Any problems with my thinking? I've riden the bike now for 2 years and as the rear is getting down to the wear marks I checked the tire dates. The fronts are 3/99 and the rears are 12/01 so knowing this they are starting to make me nervous for freeway commuting.

tabi i have the same bike as you but currently with the 750 in it. i went to the 80 series tyres after reading a lot of posts on here and have never looked back. the transformation of the handling is staggering when compared to the 90 series tyres to the point that i can head into the twisty bits go with a lot more confidance. my personal prefference is the michelin macadams, long wearing and good grip in both wet and dry conditions.
my normal life expectency on these is about 12 months. but that is riding for 12 months of the year. that includes daily commuting about 100 klms round trip, and at least once a month 600 to 1000 klms weekend run.
i hope this helps you out a little. cheers greg
