I'm about ready to order some accel ignition coils and wires for my maxim x. I spoke to an accel rep and he said that a stage one or stage two jet kit may be required to achieve maximum potential. Has any one here replaced there coils with accel coils and had the need for a jet kit. If so, where can I find a jet kit for the max X. Or am I shit outta luck?

No, coils and ignition in general have nothing to do with jets. Jet kits are a ripoff because you either have the correct mixture and the correct jets or you don't. Since the mixture has to be determined for each bike individually depending on the timing, state of valve adjustment, rate of air flow through the air filter and muffler restriction it has to be determined by trial and error for each bike. If you get a jet kit it may or may not have the jet sizes you need but it's an expensive gamble. It's better just to buy the jets you need in the correct size if you need to change them instead of getting a whole kit of unknown sizes.

thanks Stevo! What about the coils, do you think those accel coils will fit under my tank without too much fabrication?

    Here is one

My experience with jet kits has been a good one, as carbureted bikes from that era are jetted borderline lean from the factory, more to keep the EPA happy than to please the owner. They generally respond well to mild rejetting, but it is not plug-and-play. As long as you don't mind slogging through a few carb R&Rs to get things just right, you will be rewarded with a slightly better powerband and crisper throttle response.

A jet kit is spendy if you buy it new from the manufacturer, and is probably not worth the ~$125.00 they want for one. Watch Ebay and you can get one for about half that much.

Ignitions for these bikes are just fine as long as the hardware is in good shape. There are better ways to spend money on you bike.

I'm not familar with the X but Accel coils are larger than stock so you might have to be creative with mounting. On my 750 Seca and XS1100 only one would fit in the space of 2 stock coils so I had to put one there and one back under the seat. Once you get them installed you'll have better starting and idling because the stock coils are too weak and won't produce a good spark at ilde or when you have a weak battery.
