So I went down to take my bike to work and an old lady I saw in our apartment garage asks me if it smells like gas in there. It did and when I got to my xj700 I found a puddle of gas under her.

Stuck float and a bad petcock are to blame. The local dealer had a petcock rebuild kit in stock so I bought it and installed it that morning.

This stopped the leak but the next problem is I am fairly certain there is gas in the oil. Sure it smells like gas but so does everything in the area now. The main reason I think so is all of a sudden the oil level is above the sight glass.

So I have to change the oil and filter, only 800 miles early. Anything else I should check, air filter, ect.

You should change the oil and filter using some cheap 10w40 and run for 10 minutes or so under NO load. Then change oil and filter again with your regular oil. Don't forget fans on the engine while running it to keep it cool.

Unfortunately I have been there and done that. I followed this advice and it seems to do a good job of flushing the gas. Check your air filter but it there is no gas/oil on it it's fine.
