what about if you put your valve on a valve grinding machine? Do the valve clearances change for either of these valve finishing methods?

another question that I didn't think deserved it's own Thread: the stud that comes from the bottom of the head and gets nutted to the cylinder - is that improtant? the head I bought came with a bent stud and I'm just thinking worst case if it breaks when i bend it back

Yes you will change the clearances. Re-check and re-shim after the head is back together.

NOTE that there is a right and wrong way to orient the valve springs; check the service manual.

Replace the bent stud(s.) Even though you can probably bend it back, it can't be trusted.

thanks Fitz, as usual. can you explain to me what that stud is for? I'm guessing it's a safety IF ALL EIGHT head/cylinder studs/nuts break???

well, I couldn't find a stud, so I have a bolt the same length. I'm trying to figure out what the stud was for anyways, a bolt is going to do the same damn thing. oh well, bolt it is, unless someone gives me a reason that would be bad

A bolt won't "draw down" exactly like a stud; while it would probably be OK I wouldn't leave it forever.
