Went out to fire up the bike today. As I bent over to check the oil level (which I do faithfully after the leaking petcock, float valve, fuel in the crankcase incident) and saw that my oil filler cap was missing. SOB! I remembered that I had added a splash of oil the last time I rode it and remembered setting the cap on the top of the cases. I walked over to where the bike had been sitting and suddenly I had a great reason to rake up the leaves that had recently fallen. So I raked. No oil cap. Walked to the end of the driveway. No oil cap. Down the street I went. About 3/4 of block away I found the cap, laying up against the curb. Dirty and the threads were very slightly messed up. O-ring was missing? Cleaned up the threads and the cap and bummed an o-ring from my neighbor.
From this day forward I will PUT THE OIL CAP ON THE SEAT whenever I add oil.

My cousin did that with his Dodge Daytona turbo. Had a nice little oil fire under the hood once he got down the highway a ways...

Lucky you, finding that. I never get that lucky....

Ha! I pulled the left side cover off my XJ and laid it on the front fender of my Kawasaki against the forks. They are close to the same color. I messed around a little on the XJ and went for a ride on the Concours. So much for the side cover. I looked for a week for that thing. Riding, bicycling and walking the route I took. Never found it. Luckily I had a spare cover and the guy who painted my bike still had some of my color left. MAN, I'll never do that again!
