ok, it all started when my 81 maxim 650 started over revving, tracked that down to a lean burn due to petcock problems, replaced the petcock with a good one that i had and tracked another lean burn to leaking intake boots, i'm hoping that once i get those fixed i can get her on the open road, any advice...oh, by the way, engine has an oil leak at the tach cable. how do i stop this as well

You stop the tach cable leak by replacing the oil seal inside and the o-ring on the outside of the tach gear housing.

    Take a look: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=19538.html

Very common, both my XJs started leaking pretty much as soon as they became operational again.

repaired the intake boots with an innertube, not sure if i did it right, do i use RTV then the inner tube or just the innertube.....i just used the innertube. anyways, still in a super lean condition even with mixture screws at 8 out, local yamaha shop wants to overhaul the carbs and charge over 400 in labor to do it, plus parts. i need some kind of help because as a college student i don't have the money to pay 400 in labor

    Maybe leaking throttle shaft seals?

A TOTAL carb disassembly to replace those buggers.
