Don't Want to Fry the Battery

So I recently replaced the battery on the 650. The new one starts the bike, no problems. However, I noticed that the "fully charged" voltage listed in the docs that come with the batt is 12.8V.

The battery charger/maintainer I have (and the one sold at the bike shop) wants to charge the battery up to 14.xV, then switch to trickle charge.

So the first question is, will this fry that battery? I've used this charger successfully on both of the "maintenance free" batts on the Ninja and the CBR without any trouble, but when I hooked it up to the old 650 battery, it charged for hours and hours without reading a full charge and I wonder if that's what killed it.

The second question is whether I should always take the battery off of the XJ to charge it or can I charge it in place (alligator clamps)?

This will not hurt the battery. You need a slightly greater voltage to charge a battery 14.4 volts is perfect . You can charge the battery in the bike. I have a plug under the seat to hook up my battery easer. 12.8 volts is the voltage at rest.

Lostboy is spot on Rhys. Set your worries to rest.
The reason your 650 battery was charging forever without showing a full charge was because it was dead!

<whew!> I'm about to go home and hook up the charger. I've been working on the "suffering" 650 mentioned in my tagline, mostly on the various electrics lately, which means I've had the key on without running the engine a lot. That has likely drained the new batt somewhat, so I need to charge it. It's good that I will be able to do so safely.

The old batt still holds a charge, so it's good for things like bench testing flashers, but it can't be left on the charger unattended, and it certainly won't start a bike. I have a few more projects for which it'll be useful, and then it'll get recycled.

Thanks for the help, all. Much appreciated!
