So my new 85 XJ700 just keeps cropping up with leaks. The most recent is from the gasket on the right oil pump cover/emblem plate. So I check the bolts and tighten them up to spec. Turn, turn, turn, click, profanity. I broke the bolt. I extract the bolt and luckily it was easy to get out. I replace the bolt with a generic hardware store bolt with a seal on it and it still leaks. I have new bolts on order and hope they fix the leak.

I pulled the other bolts off and pulled the plate off. I was shocked when no oil came out.

I didn't see where the oil was coming from. Perhaps from that large black seal in the middle of the second picture. I even started the bike and no oil came out.

So anyone know if that seal in the center of the second pic could be leaking the oil? Where else could it be from? Any ideas? Am I just an idiot(be honest I can take it)?

    Thanks for the tips,

It's the seal, and it only leaks when you're not looking !
Out smart it by stuffing a rag, or (egads!) a diaper behind the cover,
    and fix it properly later.

No oil should be behind those covers!
If you look at the cover you will see that they actually have a drain passage cut into the gasket edge of the cover.
Any oil leaking from these covers would be from the crankshaft oil seal.

The crank case covers house a seal on the left and a plug on the right. Oil leaking in either case requires a replacement. I'm not aware of an easy way to do either of them myself but hope springs eternal!
    Best of luck!

I can't see the "2nd picture" that you've posted, but could the drip possibly be coming from the main oil galley hex-headed bolt/plug that is directly below the crankshaft/oil pump ("YAMAHA") covers?

    To update this post,

I am still not sure where the oil is coming from. I am starting to think it is actually wicking into the cover instead of leaking from it. I have washed the bike and will be watching for oil but nothing has been narrowed down any further.

Thanks for the thoughts, and keep your fingers crossed that it's not the plug or anything else seriously difficult to deal with. I am tempted to coat half the engine in permatex sealant and see if that does the trick.
