I just removed the final drive from my 85 xj700x and i need to know how to disconnect the shaft from the final drive. Also, when i removed the final drive, the driveshaft pulled right out from the u-joint. Is this normal? I thought i'd have to unattach it somehow.

ok sorry for the dumb question...upon unseating the seal and using some force it pulled right out. As far as my other question tho, is there anything that holds the shaft to the ujoint other than the force from the spring in the final drive? Just want to make sure i reassemble it correctly. thanks

Lower 48 in general. Otherwise Central Mitten.
The U-joint just slides on the spline for the driveshaft to form a slip joint. This accommodates the slight difference necessary as the suspension cycles.

thanks mighost im pretty new at workin on bikes and want to make sure i do things right (my life depends on it). And before i had it apart i heard a faint clicking so was thinking the shaft wasnt attached properly but now can rule that out. Hopefully it will go away when i put it back together with the new final drive whenever it gets here.
