What is the best way to remove the drive shaft on a xj650 to remove the engine? I could not find a definite answer while searching.
    Thanks

I wish I knew. I'm getting ready to do the same thing on the same bike. I will be watching this post like a hawk. Do you have a pic of your 650?

You have to drop the swing arm, after unbolting the U/J inside the rubber boot.

You can remove the engine with the swing arm still attached (obviously undoing the U Joint), but trust me in saying, it can be a whole hell of a lot easier by taking the swing arm assembly to the other side of the room... Mind you, when I did mine I was alone, but I kept getting the U Joint hung up when attempting to muscle out the engine. Removed the Swingarm, viola... easy peasy lemon squeezy.

I left the drive shaft in the frame when I removed my engine. Just undo the spring that goes around the boot then remove the 4 bolts that connect the shaft to the engine. I was able to muscle the engine out without it getting caught up I just had to make sure the rubber boot was pushed out of the way.

The question from 600 was how to remove the drive shaft, pulling the swing arm is the way, why would you want to remove the mill?

I see what you mean, I thought he meant that the best way to pull the drive shaft was to remove the motor.

Yeh, we've done all that hemispherical difference bit, like what order the pilot screw components go & what way the water goes down the plug hole.

can someone please tell me what size the swingarm bolts are?

And do you by chance know what size the pivot bolt is (where front forks attach to the frame)?
