I have an 82 seca 750. My bike has been running off the battery only it seems. The batt is new, I replaced the brushes in the alt. but after a few short rides the batt is drained. Anyone know the next best place to start looking for the fix.

Test the output from the alternator & at 2k+ revs it should give you 14+ volts, if this is OK maybe something is shorting to ground.

I just got done fixing this problem with my bike. I found the white wires from the stator (there 3 of them) melted at the plug beside the starter solenoid. I ended up removing the plug. Remind you I have a Seca 550, your plug maybe in a different location

Those plastic plugs are a weak point on alot of bikes I've owned in the past, Just cut the plug out, then solder the three wires together and heat shrink them. It's been the cause of many burned out stators and over heated voltage regulators by not getting enough power to the battery.
