    Hey folks,

Here's a thought - would swapping the stator from a high-amp generator (ie the X or the 1100 - 26A) into the generator of my 650 (stock 19A) be possible?

I'm highly suspecting their the exact same size, and should be swappable. Anyone see any issues with the TCI (doubtful) or battery?

    Anyone done this?

It very well might fit on the shaft ... but, I have a feeling (this said without even looking) ... that the cover , with the all wiring and brush contact plate, isn't going to fit.

The solution may be as easy as bringing-over the cover from the other bike, too. But I don't really know. Just giving you a heads-up before you open the bag of confetti.

    Good luck with it.

Altus, please let us know what you find if/when you attempt this swap, would be very useful to know if this is a legitimate swap!

I don't know about the X but the unit from an 1100 won't fit because it's too big. Also, it doesn't have anymore output so there would be no point in it.

Are you sure about that one Steve? According to my handy XJCD manuals, the 1100 Maxim's stator has the identical part number (not including the m/c version and revison code of course), and it's listed as being 26 amps like the one from the X, as opposed to the 19 amp in my 650.
Now the part drawings aren't to scale of course, but they sure look like the same size part....

Depends on the 1100 I guess. Newer ones may be similar to the X by my 1980 model has a much larger unit with no brushes. It's not like the XJ at all but similar to the XS750 and only puts out 20 amps. I wish it was 26 amps. because it will barely run the headlight at idle.

Hey, has anyone used this upgrade? It seems like it's a replacement stator unit, perhaps more tightly wound (?) than OE. Are there any other items needed/ramifications of upgrading to a higher-output alternator? Is the TCI and/or regulator going to like this? Will the extra 4 amps fry anything?

    Thanks........

I don't know anyone who has upgraded their stator but I don't think that the additional 4 amps would hurt anything unless your wires have corrosion on them (corrosion=increased line resistance=more heat=bad thing). Bit pricey but it might be just the ticket to improving a pitiful alternator output. Let us know if you take the plunge.
