    I have a 82 XJ650J and noticed that the after only about 2-3 minutes the engine is piping hot, I sort of believe more than it should be. I have replaced the oil, and cleaned the carbs entirely, Also with my colortune plug I can not get her to change from blue no matter how much I change the air mixture screws. Which makes me believe they are correct considering that I have got the exhaust system to stop popping (backfiring) while idling and while under load.

    But the biggest issue is the heat, I rand her for about a total of 12 minutes off and on while using the color tune and even the front bottom of the gas tank seemed a little warm where it was closest to the engine. Any idea, still new to Motorcycles and to working on them, but I am patient and am not letting the issues intimidate me. Hell I rebuilt the carbs from scratch and they seem to run perfect and even the professionals (garage) in my area looked at my work and thought it was great.

    Thanks in advance!

    These are air cooled bikes. When running in a garage, you need a fan on the engine.

    Thanks, I did know that they are air cooled, but I really feel like this engine gets un-normally hot, My buddies 82 Suzuki GS850L that is air cooled gets no where near as hot as this bike does.

    Heck even if someone has a IR thermometer reading off an engine idling for 5 minutes from an 82 XJ650, that is running properly it would be great to compare, I can borrow a thermometer from a friend.

    Thank you though for the input and help I do appreciate it.

    True, you do need a fan blowing on the motor, and it will "seem" hot, it's aircooled.

    If the primary mixture screws didn't change anything you were seeing in the ColorTune, either:

    -the carbs aren't as clean as you think;

    or

    -your float levels weren't accurately "wet-set"

    or

    -you didn't have the YICS blocked so you were "seeing" the combined mixtures from the other three carbs mixed with the one you were trying to tune.

    I'm going to assume that your valves are already in spec, and you did a running vacuum sync with YICS blocked prior to breaking out the ColorTune.

    I do believe the carbs are Sparkling clean, believe me when I say I was dumb the first time and had to redo them 4 times because I though I did a good job.

    But you are right I don't have a YICS blanking tool, and that would explain that, Valves are supposed to be getting checked/Done in a week or 2, but I can't drive it right now until I find my electrical issue too, tracing that right now, Tach/Brake/Signal/Horn loss, and when I put in a bigger fuse it blows the main Ignition fuse, so there is probably a voltage spike from a bad ground or a short in the wires, looking for that now. But that is definitely a whole other bag of worms.

    Thanks though for the correction and info!
