Hi all, a problem arising with my bike.

There is a noise coming from the engine. Using a screwdriver as a stethoscope, I seem to be locating it right in the centre of the case, between the alternator and starter motor.

It's like a whipping sound of a loose chain, but irregular. I drained the oil and went through it with a magnet, but found no particles at all. Nor any sign of a disintegrating guide.

So. is it the Hy-Vo, or something else ? I wouldn't have thought that chain had much play.

Is it possible that a carb out of balance could cause this ? I noticed once or twice that the engine sometimes kind of slaps and stumbles. This has even happened while the bike has been idling on the centre-stand for 5 minutes or so.

    Really appreciate anyone's thoughts...

    Hey Shannon
I posted on your other thread. When you put the 4 into 1 on did you replace the donuts that go between the header and the outlet?
I've heard people mention hearing weird noises that turned out to be a poorly sealed exhaust. Plus, you should re-jet the carbs when going from a stock to a header as you will get a lean condition which could cause some serious engine damage.

It would really help if we knew what bike you're talking about.

The answers will be different depending on whether it's a chain-driven XJ or one of the shafties.

Hi there Maxim-X, saw your post and thanks for it. As I said there, I have indeed changed out those four gaskets.

Just looking over my notes, I think I've seen a big blunder. I set the pilot screws at 1.5 turns out, instead of 2.5 as specified in Haynes. Don't know why I did that  In = lean, right ?

Hi, I'm willing but have no idea how to do that  Will have a go maybe tomorrow, if I can find a tutorial online.
