does anyone know where I could purchase an engine rebuild kit? If they even still sell them for these bikes. The motor still runs good but with 55k miles I think its time.

    What's magical about 55K? Are you sure it can't wait until 60K? 75? 110?

The Motorcycle Press is noted for saying, back in 1981, after they had the opportunity to compare the XJ-Series Engines to those of Yamaha's chief competitors: With diligent maintenance and adhering to the schedule for preventative measures; the Yamaha XJ-Engines are virtually bulletproof."

If you aren't riding just ahead of a light-blue cloud of smoke behind you.
    The Bike isn't leaking.
The Compression is still within specs.
    Nothing is knocking.
    The horns don't work.
    The Fuse Panel is disintegrating.
The Center Stand Spring not yet worn through the loops.
And the Universal Joint not klanking like a survivor in a sunken submarine, hammering out Morse Code on the hull to be rescued, ...

You are good to go, ... until you hit 60,000 Miles.
At 60-Grand you are supposed to replace the Timing Chain.
