Hey all, I'm doing a rebuild on my 1982 Yamaha XJ 650 engine. I've decided to do an entire tear down, and rebuild. I've also made a project out of the rest of the bike, so I've torn it down to the frame. I'll open a separate forum later on showing my progress as far as this goes...

So, here is my issue...As I was taking the head apart, I brain farted and when I was taking the chain sprockets off of the cams by removing those 4 four attaching bolts, I rotated the crankshaft a few times through while the cam shafts were not in sync. I think I got them back to where they were at originally but I need a little bit of reassurance. When I put everything back together, currently the #1 intake and exhaust lobes are pointing in towards each other, and the #4 valves are pointing away from each other, with the crankshaft aligned with the TDC mark.

Any help would be awesome, pics maybe?? I know that once I get everything put back together, I can just run it through the firing order and figure it out, but it'll be a while before that happens, so I was just putting this out there for some preliminary feed back.

    Thanks!!

Which manual are you using, the factory book or the Haynes? They both cover the camshaft realignment procedure well, I could refer you to the correct section.

Be careful turning the motor over with the cams out of "time" these are "interference" motors. You could bend a couple of valves.

Thanks for the reply...I guess I could have just read on and figured this out my self!! I have the Haynes manual and I think I found what you are talking about. I found it on pg. 108 sect. 48. I think I should be ok with the valves, we'll see, I still have yet to take the head off.

Is Chacal still the go to parts guy from this forum?

    Thanks again...we'll see tomorrow
