My old exhaust collector is damaged, crushed on #4 pipe and the chrome trim is broken.

I scored a good second hand collector from a bike wreckers. It has the usual surface rust on the pipes, and the chrome trim pieces are good. Is it worthwhile sanding back the pipes and repainting with exhaust paint?

I would start by using Naval Jelly to get the worst of the rust off and then buff up what's left and see where you're at first. You're not supposed to use Naval Jelly on chrome but if applied with precision accuracy to only the bad rust and carefully monitored it works marvelously.

You might end up wanting to paint the "box" part under the motor, depending how bad it is.

I got a good condition complete exhaust on Ebay when my original collector one rusted out and broke.
I sandblasted it and used barbecue paint on the collector. It still looks brand new after two seasons.
IMHO-Go ahead and paint it. A little protection cant hurt.
