I have a 82 xj750j maxim. I took apart the whole exhaust system to clean up. I got the headers and collector to fit onto the bike. But the exhaust/mufflers are giving me trouble.

They slip on fine but when I clamp them down, they still are a little loose and can be removed from the collector with a some force.

Is this normal? Is there any way I can make the fit tighter?

    Did you get new gaskets?
There are gaskets at every joint. The gaskets at the mufflers are long cylinders that go over the the collector outlet pipes and the mufflers slip over that. The same type go between the headers and collector.

Oh, okay thanks. Let me try that. I just checked and I think the gasket is actually stuck inside the muffler from all the corrosion.

Would some kind of sealant help make it air tight? I'm not sure if there are leaks yet since I still have some work to do before I can start the bike.
