On the way to work this morning my '82 650 Seca would not shift into fifth gear on the freeway. All of the other gears shift perfectly. I changed the oil 500 miles ago. The clutch adjustment is good. I have not had any problems with the transmission until now. Any thoughts, K-Moe, Hogfiddles or any other XJ experts? I usually cruise at 65 -70 on the freeway, do not do burnouts or wheelies. I have 58,000 miles on it, and I am the original owner.

Thanks, any ideas would be greatly apperciated
    Gary

My first thought when the transmission suddenly can't shift into a gear is the primary (alternator) chain guide coming apart, but it may be the shift return spring not working correctly. Both can be inspected by removing the shift cover (drop your oil first).

Thanks K-Moe, I'll check it out tomorrow. At 58,000 miles, it's probably time to split the cases and replace the guides and internal chains. I already have the gasket for the shift cover, thanks to Chacal.
