First off, sorry there's no pics yet but I'll add them as the build progresses.

This is a project my dad and I are going to be working on together. Starting with my grandpa's old 82 XJ650 that's been sitting for quite some time. When my grandpa passed my dad was just going to sell it to a junk yard but I got the idea to fix it up.

Once we get it running we're going to do a full tune up including a K&N drop in filter. Eventually we want to completely debadge it, drop the rear end and weld the swing arm in place using heat treated stainless steel, throw some custom cut struts on instead of the shocks (my dad makes knives for a living, so we're looking at cutting them like a d-handle knife), and then put a shorty fender on it. The brake light and turn signals will all be replaced with LEDs (hopefully I'm not biting off more than I can chew here. I work in electronics but not sure how much is necessary to get the LEDs to work instead of the normal bulbs). After everything is done we're going to repaint the frame and everything in black and then repaint the rear fender and gas tank candy apple red. The mufflers will also be removed, and we're just going to put 1 3/4 inch drag pipe baffles in the back end up pipes before welding some turn downs on where the mufflers were.

Right now I'm in the process of cleaning out the carbs as best I can because the bike sat for a number of years while my grandpa was sick and the gas varnished. I'm going to rejet them while I have them torn apart because of the drag pipes and the K&N filter. Thinking about increasing the mains 4 sizes and the pilots 1 size. Any suggestions on what sizes to get are MORE than welcome - I have experience tuning a carbed V8, but not rejetting a bike.

Next time I get a chance I'm going to start tearing the parts off the bike that we won't be using and putting them up for sale for if anybody wants them. These include all of the lights, the shocks/springs, the mufflers, the speedo/tach, and a fairing that looks like it probably came off a seca turbo. All the parts are in good condition but in need of a good washing. The bike only has 16,xxx miles on it, but has been sitting for a while as I said earlier.

Will post more info as the project continues! Hoping to get most of it done over the next couple months.

The XJ frame and swingarm are not made of stainless, so I don't think you would want to do this :?:

Anyway, pics are a must - looking forward to seeing what you've got :D
