I finally picked up the bike, and i took a few quick pics with my phone camera, only one of them turned out decent. I'm not exaclty sure what model it is, I know its an 82 and a Seca, but the displacement and such is something of a mystery, and I seem to only have a 9 digit VIN, its the same stamped, on the sticker, on the engine, and on the title. So, if anyone has any advice in that regard, it would probably help. I need to clean the tank out, get a new clutch cable, figure out why the front brake doesn't work, and get an air filter for sure....after that who knows.

Go to https://cycle.geico.com and fill out the form for an insurance quote. You only have to fill out the first 2 pages and on the third, it'll tell you at the top of the page what the bike is.

You may also post the first six digits of your VIN here and we can let you know or confirm your findings.

I'm with Flooglebinder, that sure looks like a sprocket behind the wheel. That would make it a 550, no? Model XJ550RJ

Thanks to everyone for clearing that up for me, now I can make sure I get the right manual and such. Bike started last night, but as I had removed the clutch cable, it didn't go anywhere.

Actually, if I may ask, what are the distinguishing features that helped y'all ID it?

You've got a chain & sprocket rear final drive -- only the 400's and 550's had that, everything bigger got shaft drive

How did we all identify it?

The fairing was only available on the 550
Chain drive was available on the 400 and 550, shaft drive on the 650, 750, 900 and 1100
    The 400 was a twin.
7" headlight was only on the 400 and 550. 650 had an 8" light, 750, 900 and 1100 had square lights.

The 400 also had the rectangular headlight.

That tail light is particular to the 550, too. I found that out while trying to replace mine.

The '81's came in Pearl White (XJ550RH)
The '82's came in red (XJ550RJ)
The '83's came in black (XJ550RK)
    550 Seca's had the fairing.
550's had chain drive and rear drum brake
Is that a Gemini can on the header? Let me know if you decide to replace it!
