Thank you in advance for all the help. I have been lurking on this group for a long time and decided to join. You guys, collectively, are the greatest source for FJ/XJ info on the web.

Question: As I understand the front suspension the springs are responsible for dampening and the oil is what controls rebound. You want the transfer of the bikes weight onto the front tire during breaking and as you exit the corner, off the front break and on the gas, the weight transitions from the front back toward the rear. How quickly do you want that transition to take place? I have an 84’ FJ600 with progressive springs that I added a 1” PVC spacer to and 20 wt fork oil, much heavier than recommended, because I have always been annoyed by the amount of dive the front end has under breaking. Any suggestions or comments on my choices? What are the pros and cons? Thanks again.

When my xj600 had it mot roadworthy test I had 10w oil in and the mechanic advised me to use 20w - exactly what you have done.

I thought the springs compress and the oil controls the dampening and rebound.

Dont forget the rear shock and suspension linkages!

    Welcome to the site.

BTW - Great looking bike! Somebody has spent a lot of cash on that exhaust!

the fork oil weight changes compression and rebound
the weight transfers to the rear as soon as you get on the gas, regardless of when the forks rebound
the forks compressing change the geometry and give you a little quicker turning, just something else to think about
