I just noticed recently when I parked my bike in the underground car park at work that the instrument lights - i.e. neutral light and speedo and tacho lights - were flickering at idle.

They are OK at above idle but flickering quickly at 1000rpm.

    Is it the alternator?

    Thanks.

From my experience working behind the parts counter, I'd say your voltage regulator may need some attention. I'm not saying it's bad, but you may have a dirty ground. Remember the old Chrysler's with their voltage regulators mounted to the firewall? Rain water would wash down behind them causing rust where they mounted to the body. This would build up rust and cause a bad ground condition which would usually manifest itself as pulsating headlights at idle. Basically, the voltage regulator couldn't correctly sense the draw on the system so it would pulsate. I'd start by removing the voltage regulator and clean its ground. Might as well clean the voltage regulator's electrical connector while you're at it. Don't forget to squirt a little dielectric grease into the plug before you reconnect it.

I would say it sounds like a ground alright but I'd expand the search to the entire bike engine and frame.
