Hey guys double checking myself been a long time since i did these little hitachis. Most manufacturers say to measure from the bottom of the carb where the gsk sits. The factory shop manual says to measure from the outer bottom lip that hangs over the bowl. Just want to make sure. On my maxim the former owner cleaned and set the levels he said he thought he had them pretty close but had the carbs off 4 or 5 times. The floats are all different heights inners look close dry but the outers are lower sitting at a 45 degree angle. I am going to set 1 wet then use a gauge and set the rest the same it will make it easier when they are close to wet set them. The bike takes for ever to warm up and does not idle a little choke runs fine at constant throttle when you crack it open it bogs then takes off when it pulls gas up the straw above 3k it runs great when its got most vacuum.. I have rebuilt 100s of carbs over the years they were spotless on the inside #1 and 4 head pipes are bluing a little. Those of you that know me know i know what i am doing been a mechanic over 35 years. I am sure when i set these it will be right. Valves are in spec bench sync was spot on. Will buy a yics tool next week and use my motion pro when i get them re installed

Your factory manual has you measuring the fuel level, which is measured to the bottom of that lip.

Float height is typically measured to the gasket surface, but I don't believe your service manual provides that measurement. I think you'll find a float height of 17.5mm will get the fuel level pretty close.

That is also 17.5mm from the body-to-gasket surface, NOT from on the ridge.....

And that 17.5mm measurement is from the gasket surface on the carb body to WHERE on the float? :)

To the proper measuring spot, of course.;)

I measure in line with the needle jet, to the part of the float away from the carb body. And the carbs should not be fully inverted to make sure the float weight does not compress the spring in the needle.

Yes. Again, at the mid-point of the float bowl.

PERSONALLY, I have found that a very careful setting of the 17.5 mm results in not needing to do a wet-set. I recommend to anyone that I rebuild carbs for, that they DO the wet setting, but I haven't needed to on any of my bikes--they run beautifully when I'm done, and the other thing that I do is set the mixture screws at 2.5, and then give them about 1/8 turn more. The colortune is always right on bunsen-blue.

Carbs are back on even with the boots off idles great revs right up. I shimmed the needles up about.010 and went up 1 size on the pilots . Just fire it up with the choke then you can shut it off and idles great. Now for the fun part trying to squeeze the boots back on hair dryer and some dull curved pics. Hopefully i wont need new ones you can squeeze the ends that go on the carbs and they return to their shape. Maybe in the next few days can get them on.

I put mine in the dryer it worked great. #2 and 3 were a major pain in the but but 1 and 4 went right on. Just need to buy a yics tool and sync. Surprising it runs about perfect with just a bench sync. Glad that part is done took about 1.5 hours to do
