sounds like the petcock was left in the prime position,I would drain the oil which is probably mixed with fuel. The same thing happened to me. you will need to test the petcock to see if it drains fuel in the on or reserve position.

the petcock does leak when in any position, so ihave a petcock rebuild kit on order and it should be here in a few days but what else could cause this? and there is what appears to be dirt and scum in the bottom of the airbox should i worry about cleaning it out somehow and if i should clean it out what should i do spray it with the garden hose when the carbs are off?

I just found a step by step process of how to clean the carbs on my bike and i think i am going to take a chance and gamble on myself to clean and rebuild my carbs. This will be the first time i will have them apart so wish me luck and keep the carbs in your prayers hoping they make it through

If the air box filled you have two fold problem.
ONe petcock, two needle valve not seating.
So it looks like you are heading in the right direction.
Good luck take your time and remember they can never be to clean.

follow the How to carefully. Work methodically and well organized. Take your time don't rush or cut corners. Think surgically clean not just good enough.

Organize parts so you know where they came from - diagram or take pics if you need to.

you will do fine - it's really not very hard.

thats the thing i have a fear that if i take it apart that it will not go back together the way it goes and that scares the shit out of me since i really cant afford to send it to a shop.

I used carb cleaner - if you take them completely apart and remove the rubber bits you can soak in heated pinesol or lemon juice but you may not need ot do a complete tear down.

Soak your jets in carb cleaner - poke all the passages and make sure all the passages are clear by spraying cleaner through them, make sure the emulsion tube is cleaned out.

Depends on it's condition - look at your jets for previous damage. Check your bowl seals, needles and seats...
