Hi everyone. Was crashing around the net and found this site. I got a free '81 550 Maxim and didn't know what to do with it.I took all the ugly bits off and saw that it had good lines so I'm building it old school. The tank is a vintage Paucho, bars are 1" harley, 5" headlight, 36 Ford tail light, Maxxis white walls.
I haven't built a bike in 30 years. I forgot how much fun it is!
I don't know shit about computers so bear with me as I try to post pix.
My pix are too big. I'll get one of my boys to shoe me how to resize the pix.

Welcome sgary. You found a primo web site, with a wealth of information, and tons of good folks that are willing to lend a hand to answer your questions. One thing that is always helpful is to add the year and model of your bike in your signature, so that the questions that you have can be answered more accurately. The local parts guy "chacal" is always on the spot to get you what you need, and I can tell you from experience that he is FAST!! He ships from Atlanta GA, and my parts get to me regularly within 2 days to Portland OR. Lots of tutorials to answer questions yourself too. So again, welcome.

Looks like you ain't afraid to dive-in to the deep end of the pool!
That's an ambitious project you embarked on. Are you going to have to do engine work? Was it a running bike before you went to Wrench City?

We're always very happy to have Members like you. Especially ones who will bring us along on the project by sharing all the details with us photographically as the project moves along.

Looks like you didn't have much difficulty taking-off all the parts.
I hope it all works-out for you and you create something for yourself that will bring you great pleasure and entertain all of us throughout the weeks and months to come.

I actually got 2 bikes. The one pictured and one minus front wheel seat and pipes. Both sat for years but turned over. Heads are being done, cylinders are OK. Trans appears OK. I've been into Harleys mostly and am tired of that scene. I was going to build a hardtail but I've got a bad back so I found some 10" shocks. They lower the back about 2" and I might relocate the bottom mount to lower it a bit more. Glad to see metric choppers, hand built, personal, rolling art, not just crap from the shelf slapped on. I live in Burnaby BC and there's about one to two months of good riding weather here.

Looks like you have a lot of long days and nights ahead of you. Please keep us updated with more pics? I'd love to see how it goes. Welcome to the site by the way. The guys on here are a wealth of knowledge for sure. You ask and a dozen or so guys will have an answer for ya. I would definitely suggest investing n the XJCD for a great reference. Take care.
