When I bought the bike a couple of years ago the front left fork was leaking and I had a repair shop replace the seals. Unfortunately, it has had a slight leak on the same fork tube since it got it back. Now that I have the carbs correct I can deal with the forks.

My question is do the forks have to be completely dismantled to replace the seals? I'm thinking that the shop simply popped the seals out and replaced them with out dismantling and cleaning them.

Second, since new seals were installed, what should I be looking for as a reason for the continued leak?

    1. Yes the forks have to be disassembled to remove the old seals and replace them with new. There are shortcuts that can be taken, but the risk of damaging the upper fork tube is not worth the small amount of time saved. I can't imagine a reputable shop taking a shortcut on that job.

    2. Look for pitting or knicks along the protion of the top tube that is wiped by the seal.

    3. Get good fork seals. Stay far, far away from Leak Proof brand seals. They do exactly the opposite of what the brand name implies.
