I just found 81 XS850. Anyone know anything about this bike? It needs a lot of work but the price is right. Not sure if I should jump on this or not.

If it is free than the price is right, I would not pay much more than that for it. Especally if it needs lots of work. There were some engine issues with the 750 and 850 tripples. I have tried to resurect two of them and gave up after a compression test showed low on the middle cylinder. I can't remember the exact problem . do a net search and check it out.

You'll find all the info you need for it over on the Yamaha-Triples.Org Forum.

Had a few XS750 Triples over the years. Run well, Lotsa low end torque. MIC II carbs are easier to find parts for. That 81XS850 should have Hitachi's on it. Primary chains stretching on the XS750's were a problem, I don't recall seeing any problems on the XS850 though. Cam chain has to be broken to remove the head. The XS850 uses the same pistons/rings as the XS1100 of that year.
