Yeah, i know, you veterans already know this, but i wanted to share with my fellow noobs. First time i changed my oil, i paid twelve bucks at the dealer to get a filter....did it come with O-rings? NO!

then the other day i was at advance auto and noticed they had cycle filters. They had mine in stock, and yes! the Frams come with the filter housing o-rings! and it was about 7 bucks!

(i just paid almost the same amount just ordering the two dang o-rings by themselves)

Now when i stop at a red light, there isnt any smoke rolling up from below, and i got a clean carport!!! (actually its cluttered as hell, but there aint no oil on it!!!)

I buy my Fram filters at my local Canadian Tire store. They come with the O rings alright, but I find that the way Fram packages them, all crumpled up and bent, that they are useless. The O ring is so mis shapen that it doesn't stay put while I reassemble the filter housing and gets pinched letting oil out when I start her up.

I have stoped changing the O rings and have been reusing one that I know stays put for multi oil changes now. I have thought about contacting Fram about it but have not bothered as yet.

Anyone else find this to be a problem?

    Cheers,

    Brian H.

All you have to do is smear some Synthetic Waterproof Grease in the O-ring channel and the O-ring will stay put until you tighten-up the Cover.

Sometimes just smearing the channel with Oil will do the trick. But, I prefer using the smear of Grease because that holds it like glue and there's no chance of getting it pinched.

Since I'm changing the Oil at 3,000 Mile increments, anyway ... I don't change the O-ring out every time.
I've been having good success with this technique since I got the bike.

Just enough of a smear to hold it in place.
You don't need much much at all.

I've never had a leak with the Fram o-rings. In fact, I've reused them a few times before replacing them (shameful, I know). I just take my time seating the cover and make sure the ring hasn't squeezed out of the groove before I thread the bolt home.

I went the rick-route and smeared grease in the groove. It stayed put until i got it installed. I agree that Fram could do a better job, but it's no biggie with a touch of grease.
