I am beginning the process of fixing my front brakes on my 81 XJ750 seca. At the end of last season my front brakes stopped working altogether. I could pull the lever to the end and there was no stopping at all. As a novice mechanic but willing to try anything I am looking for suggestions as to where I should start to diagnose and fix. My thoughts are, that at a minimum, the brake line will need to be replaced. Beyond that I am a bit unsure. I have read some information on this site that also suggests I should rebuild the master cylinder. What other things should I consider for replacement and or repair. Thanks in advance to those willing to answer.

I'm not much more than novice myself .... but caliper is also a potential problem.

    Try bleeding the brakes first.
This is the process of expelling any air and old brake fluid from the master cylinder through the hoses and down to the caliper.
I'm not going into detail on this so you could try searching Youtube or wait for a more detailed reply.

    Just a (scary) thought....

    Are your brake components original?

You probably need a full rebuild on the master cylinder and calipers, in addition to new lines.

Replace/rebuild EVERYTHING in the front brake system. Take no chances, as the lines should be replaced after 4 years, the master cylinder rebuilt every 4 and the calipers rebuilt every 2. Probably conservative on the part of Yamaha, but 30 years later none of those components should be original. Replace the pads too regardless of wear as they become brittle with age. You don't want your pads to crumble with you need them most.

Another thing to consider on a 750 Seca is the cable actuated master cylinder. You can replace this with a handle bar mounted one, just make sure that the seals in that master cylinder are good (i.e. rebuild it if used). You'll need to size up another brake line and get a union that fits the end (other twin disc xjs, except the 900s have the right ones).

Your life depends on your front brake system working appropriately.
