I just purchased a XJ750J Maxim a couple of weeks ago. It has 10,600 miles on it and it runs ok, I think I need to clean and sync the carbs.

My first question for now is: My front brakes are not releasing completely. I can still drive it and it moves great, even with my 6'7" 350lb body on it.

When I put it on the center stand and lift the front tire up, it doesn't spin freely. It will spin a little then stop. The front brakes will stop me when I'm going down the road and pull the lever. Then I can continue when I release the lever.

I'm wondering what I have to rebuild, the master cylinder, calipers, or both.

I would suggest both if the bike has setting for awhile.
In the Master cyl. you'll find a very small return hole be sure to clean it good.

I had this same problem. I had to rebuild my calipers which wasn't a bad job. I have been told that a little brake cleaner or degreaser on the calipers at the piston will help clean the gunk off and may allow them to retract like they should.
