front differential oil?

    The shaft drive has of course a differential in the hub of the rear wheel But the shaft also has a set of bevel gears under the left engine cover . I have attached a pic of the front of the drive just ahead of the u joint. Are these bevel gears oiled with engine oil? I think they are, but I thought I would ask experts here. I do not remember any oil dripping out when the cover was removed.....

    they are lubed by engine oil. Only the XJ1100 has a separated gearbox that needs oil change for the bevel gears.

    Thanks. I suspected that, but since I know of other bikes that do take a special oil for the bevel gears I thought I would quickly check here... Thanks again!

    The shaft drives do not have a differential. They are just ordinary 90 degree bevel gears; no spiders.

    There's a half round plug that fits below the bevel gear that makes a puddle for it to run in, make sure it's there
