to start off, I did a nice ride to visit a friend 200 miles away :) this weekend. the weather was great and spent the day riding together on my 650 maxim today around various lakes and resevoirs. overall though, i was not satisfied with my fuel efficiency :?

going there friday evening, i managed around 42 mpg. coming home today fighting the windy and 90 degree conditions, it dropped significantly. around 35 mpg. does this seem about right or what else could have been done to boost my efficiency? i realize that my full body fairing is slowing my bike down somewhat but was hoping to get at least 45 easily since it was merely 200 miles one way, all highway cruising around 65mph around ~4800rpm

either way, it is a great feeling to put trust into the work you do by yourself to get a 28 year old bike running again and travel 500 miles plus in one weekend :D anybody else have a great weekend like me and what advice do you have? just curious what others mpg is usually around...

I don't calculate Miles Per Gallon.
I only care about Fun Per Gallon.

I don't even know what this Bike is getting, right now.
I tweaked it a hair Rich because I was getting-on-it hard with the Leaner setting and burned-out a couple of Exhaust Flange Donuts.

I just reset the Trip-O-meter to: 000.0 when I get gas and get more when the Trip-O-Meter reads: 070.0

    It runs good.
    Don't leak
    Starts and needs a clutch.
I got the Clutch. I'm just not at the emotional level to replace it.

I enjoy the ride as well!
But just to make sure I have it tuned up properly I do watch the MPG everytime I fill up each one.
    XJ550 Maxim gets 48
    XS750 2D gets 36 (Fun to Ride)
XS1100 Special gets 29( Real Run to Ride :D )
    XS1100 Standard gets 36

Should have the XJ750 Seca back together next week to see what it gets.

Never checked the mileage. If I cared about mileage I'd keep one of the Rebels I buy and sell. They get in the 70mpg range. :)

Hey Wildman, at Jacks Rebel Warehouse in Sanford they do "Rebel Runs" for gas mileage, and they claim 104 MPG on a back road loop ( they're not doing 55)

Recently I got 46 MPG on my 750 at a steady 60, but last year I got 49 MPG on my 900 the first 4 tanks. Back-to-back. Driving Fast.

Both my Seca 550s average 52mpg-56mpg all around. On a day trip, running at highway speed 60-70mph all day I get right at 56mpg; both bikes.

I get ~42 mpg consistantly wish i could go farther than 180km on a tank before hitting reserve. That's 2 trips to work then fill :(

Jack's good people. I've done business with them several times. Definitely the Guru's of Rebels. LOL I belong to the same Rebel forum that he does.

I found it all depends on how much fun your having
40mpg = no fun staying under 6k rpm
30mpg = lots of fun, on the pipe, redline baby!!!

On a 1300 mile trip last week my X surprised me in the mountains loaded with camping gear by getting 55-60. I guess it was the higher elevations and the low speeds. On the way back at 75 on the interstate it backed down to 45. Just depends on how you ride.

I put five bucks in it last week and still have some left in the tank.
I am not sure what mileage it gets but it is certainly more efficient than my car.
I ride to work unless rain is a factor. The 2 mile commute for one week is less than 5 bucks. That includes coming home for lunch.
That's good enough for me.

XJ 650 gets in the high 30's. 854 lb BMW LT? 47 mpg average with a top of 52.4 mpg from Vancouver,WA to Spokane, WA about 350 highway miles. With the sidecar on the mileage drops to 32 mpg. My most favorite part is that I don't even need to think about getting more gas before 250 miles. EFI rules!

BTW. BMW K1200 LT is 1200 cc with automotive cruise control. EFI, CC, and 2400 RPM at 60 mph really makes a difference.

Full fairings also contribute to the good mileage. Want to drop the mileage 2-3 mpg? Raise the electric windshield to a high position and the mileage will tank.

I often ride along the Washington shore of the Columbia River which has nice twisties as well as fairly significant changes in elevation. I have learned that it's great fun to pull up behind loaded semis going up the hills at 40 to 45 mph, drop to 4th or even 3rd and accelerate to 100 mph by the time I get to the front bumper of the truck. Then back down to the 65 mph speed limit. This stunt is good for a few good jabs in the ribs and some chirping over the intercom when my wife is riding pillion. My other riding partner just thinks it's cool. Should listen to my wife!!!
