Looking for a tank to fit a 1980 xj 650 maxim. I have my xj cd on order. But in the mean time i want to get moving on getting a tank and getting it to the painter. I have been using EPRAY and wanted to order it now:

    1. What model year bike tank(s) will fit a ]1980 xj650 Maxim frame?

    2. Are there modifications to those tanks to get them to fit?

    3. I heard that parts up to model year 1983 are able to be cannibalized and function on previous years is this true?

This is a fantastic site and I thank everybody for the help.

As far as I know the 650 and 750 tanks swap just fine. I've done this. I read on here someone a 550 tank fits as well. Some one else will be along shortly to chime in.

650 - 750 interchangable.. except for the seca's if I remember correctly. Some have mod'd sporster tanks to fit and I believe I've seen a few Fatboy tanks as well with a little nip, tuck and weld.

    80 to 83 650 Maxim's -- almost all parts are interchangeable.
For tanks, we're pretty much limited to the 650 & 750 Maxim's -- all others require fairly significant modification to fit.
Having said that, you can make anything fit if you really want to; just depends on the level of modification you're willing to go to.

I upped the tank on my 650 to a 750 for the extra fuel. Straight out swap and I got a fuel sender too.
