Got any good ideas on how to get a gas cap off that is stuck. Been working on this 81 xj650 for less than two months. The key worked fine when i drained the tank, but now i can't get it to work no matter what. I am thinking i am going to put another cap on, but that entails getting this one off.
    Thanks

I would suggest soakin' the mechanism (right through the key slot) with either Kroil or Marvel Mystery Oil. Give it a few hours and then try the key again. Once you get it open, you will need to pull it apart and clean it out to keep it from happening again.

I've fought this gremlin before, it is a royal PITA but doable.
Patience is a virtue... yeah, right.

This is what you might find, I successfully rebuilt this one using all the original parts.

Once you do get it off, you can adjust the screw a bit to get a better fit.
I replaced my tank and the cap did not fit well until I moved the screw a bit.

    Good luck!

No other means of getting it open short of drilling out the lock (which I would go to extreme measures to avoid). The chrome cover is crimped into place, no way to take it off without damaging it permanently. Moreover, it wouldn't buy you anything in your quest to open this thing up.
